If you buy herbal supplements and read only one thing about labels, make it this. A milligram figure on a botanical extract is close to meaningless on its own — and the number that gives it meaning is frequently absent.
Two supplements both state "Bacopa monnieri extract 300 mg". They can differ in active content by an order of magnitude.
Herbs are not single compounds. A plant contains hundreds of substances, of which a handful are the biologically active ones the research concerns. How much of those a given extract contains depends on the plant material, the extraction method and how the manufacturer chose to concentrate it.
Standardisation is the process of guaranteeing a specific percentage of the active compounds. Without it, the weight on the label tells you how much powder is in the capsule and nothing about what it will do.
A standardised extract states both a weight and a percentage:
Bacopa monnieri extract (leaf) 300 mg, standardised to 50% bacosides (150 mg bacosides)
That label tells you exactly what you are getting and lets you compare it against the trials, which is the entire point.
Compare with:
Bacopa monnieri 300 mg
This could be a 50% standardised extract, a 20% one, or plain dried leaf powder. All three are legally described the same way and may differ by a factor of ten or more in active content.
Worth clarifying because the two are easily confused.
You will sometimes see "10:1 extract", meaning ten parts raw herb were used to produce one part extract. That describes concentration by weight, not active compound content.
A 10:1 extract sounds impressive, but if the extraction method did not efficiently capture the active compounds, it can still contain less of them than a well-made 4:1 standardised extract. Ratio tells you about process; standardisation tells you about content. Standardisation is the more useful number.

These percentages are not arbitrary. They are the preparations the clinical evidence was generated with, and a product not matching them is not the thing that was studied.

Worth knowing, because it is the reason standardisation claims from unverified sources are worth less than they appear.
Botanical adulteration is a documented and persistent problem. Reported patterns include cheaper related species substituted for the named one, plant parts other than those specified, and in some cases synthetic compounds added to hit a standardisation figure without the accompanying plant matrix.
Rhodiola is a frequently cited example, where cheaper Rhodiola species and synthetic salidroside have been found in products sold as R. rosea.
This is why third-party testing and certificates of analysis matter, and why a brand willing to provide a batch COA is signalling something meaningful.
